Social media is a great tool to connect with residents across Edmonton. However, It is my responsibility to ensure that my social media pages and the interactions on them remain safe, constructive, and respectful for everyone.
This doesn’t mean we can’t have open and constructive dialogue that includes critiques of decisions of Council or myself. In fact, I have really enjoyed engaging with residents in a way that I can share what went into my decision-making and get feedback on those decisions.
I’ve outlined the specific instances in which you may find comments may be hidden, deleted or blocked on any of my social media platforms.
Hidden:
- Content or statements that contain misinformation or disinformation.
- Sharing or spamming links to other pages or websites.
- Personal attacks towards me or Council members (or as a whole).
- Discussions conducted in bad faith.
Deleted:
- Violations of privacy that include: sharing personal information of another person without permission, including the names or photos of City staff.
- Personal attacks towards others or the use of inappropriate or vulgar language.
- These pages are not spaces for election campaigning. Comments that promote or oppose candidates, political parties or campaigns may be removed.
Blocked:
- Persistent behaviour from the previous categories despite warnings, or:
- Suspected bots
- Threats that cause concern for public or personal safety & hate speech.
- Aggressive or persistent harassing behaviour.
- Comment bombing (the act of posting the same message on a large number of posts).
Behaviour that requires blocking is documented, and may be shared with appropriate parties, including corporate security and/or law enforcement where appropriate.
Remember, social media is only one of the many ways you can engage with me and the rest of the Council. My social media accounts are not monitored 24/7 and responses are not guaranteed.
