Migrant Inclusion in Edmonton

Migrants are welcome in Edmonton. Recently the City took another step towards supporting migrants as Edmonton’s population continues to expand. As we grow, it’s important to align our policies and practices, to welcome and actively support new residents. Their diverse skills, perspectives and talents are needed as we grow towards a population of 2 million.
Council recently approved the report to update City Policy C529A - Migrant Inclusion. The policy gives guidance to advance social inclusion and belonging of migrants in Edmonton.
To carry out the policy update, a Migrant Action Plan will be developed. This plan will give guidance on current and future initiatives that affect migrants.
A few highlights from the recent report include:
Current statistics show that 32.5% of the population are migrants who provide economic, social and cultural benefits to our city.
Since 2016 Edmonton has welcomed evacuees from Syria (2,183) Ukraine (15,900), and Afghanistan (5,215).
Municipalities play a crucial role in supporting migrants as the initial point of contact for essential services.
